Start a new WPI
Please observe: This article describes how to create a WPI for one (1) product. For information on how to create a Group WPI, please see the article called 'Create a Group WPI / BA'.
To start a new WPI / BA for a product, either choose to click on New directly, or choose a product under Products without WPI.
If you select a product from the Products without WPI list, then select New and click Next
(Not required can be used if the product does not require a WPI, but you still want to show that it has been handled. Write a comment and click Next, and the WPI will get status Finished - not required. Click on it again to be able to publish it.)
Follow the different steps of the WPI, see below. Note that the SDS is always available from the top menu for when you need it. You can always save your work and carry on another time. When the WPI is finished, it needs to be published in order for the document to be available for you to print/show to the workers that will handle the chemical product and need the instructions.
First page of WPI: Hazardous substances (Identification)
After choosing to create a new WPI/BA you will come the the first page of the WPI/BA.
You can choose to use the information from the SDS or add your own information in the fields.
1. From SDS When the box is marked the information will be taken from the product's SDS.
Two examples:
Water hazard class / Wassergefährdungsklasse (Deutschland) : section 15 from SDS
Physical state - section 9 from SDS
2. UFI code is visible if it is available in the SDS, if not you can add it yourself if you have it.
3. Activity field is mandatory and here you should add a name for the activity for the WPI. The WPI activity name will be visible in the WPI.
4. Free text Here you can add any information that you want to be visible in the WPI.
5. Workplace Add physical location where products is used/stored.
6. Next revision Here you can set an expiration date for the WPI. When the date has expired the WPI will be marked as old.
7. Local name / description Here you can add a short description that will be visible in the WPI.
Second page of WPI: Hazards to human health and the environment
Decide if you want to keep the information from the SDS or if you want to customize it.
Note that in all steps, the SDS is available for you if you need it.
You can also insert local information as free text. If you click Copy, you can copy and then customize the information from the SDS.
Pictograms will be preselected if the SDS contains classifications. Click on the pictograms to activate or deactivate them.
Click on Next
Third page of WPI: Protective measures and rules of conduct
Insert information on local protection measures and required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Symbols will be preselected if the SDS contains information on protective measures.
Decide which symbols should appear on the WPI by selecting or deselecting them.
Alternatively, you can insert local information as free text. If you click Copy, you can copy and then customize the information from the SDS.
*Show information from risk assessment: If this product has a signed risk assessment (separate module in iChemistry) connected to it, you will get the option to use the information already added in the risk assessment's Handling instructions. Mark the box Show information from risk assessment to select the signed risk assessment and to copy information from it. If you do not know what a risk assessment in iChemistry is, you probably don't use that module, and can ignore this checkbox
Fourth page of the WPI: Conduct in the case of danger
Define measures to be done in the case of danger and describe how the hazardous substance should be handled in case of an accident or fire.
Decide which fire protection signs should be illustrated on the workplace instruction.
Show information from risk assessment: See above* for explanation.
Emergency telephone number is mandatory and is visible in the WPI / BA under the section for Conduct in the case of danger.
In Settings > Emergency phone number, you can choose a department specific emergency phone number, which will be automatically filled in when creating a new WPI.
Fifth page of the WPI: First aid
Define first aid measures and required first aid equipment.
Name first responders including respective telephone numbers.
Decide which rescue signs should appear on the workplace instruction.
Show information from risk assessment: See above* for explanation.
Emergency telephone number will be mandatory and is visible in the WPI / BA under the section under First aid.
In Settings > Emergency phone number, you can choose a department specific emergency phone number, which will be automatically filled in when creating a new WPI.
Sixth page of the WPI: Proper disposal
Add information regarding proper disposal.
Show information from risk assessment: See above* for explanation.
Waste key will also be visible in the WPI / BA and if there is any information form the SDS it will be visible here.
WPI / BA Summary
The last step in the WPI/BA creation is to view the summary before publishing.
In the top menu you can choose to publish. (Choose your WPI/BA Template and click on OK.)
The information you added is visible in the WPI / BA:
Copy WPI/BA
If you want to copy a WPI, you can navigate to Tools > WPI > New and then click Copy.
1. Start with choosing from which department you want to search for the WPI/BA you want to copy from. After choosing, the possible options of that department will be shown in the fields below.
2. Choose a product in the list below
3. Click on Next in the top menu
4. You will end up in the summary of the copied WPI/BA. You can edit the parts you need.
